Adjusting to Living at High Altitude: 5 Tips

Moving from low to high elevation can wreak havoc on your body. Living where the air is thinner and dryer means the sky is bluer (really!) and humidity is a distant memory, but for some people it also means increased headaches, nausea, and dizziness as their body adjusts. Here are some tips to help you ease into living at high altitude if you’re moving to Terrain.

    1. Hydrate: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. If you are moving to high altitude, begin to increase your water intake one to two days before the move. Also consider reducing alcohol intake during the adjustment period, as alcohol dehydrates your body.
    2. Gradually Increase Altitude: Decrease your altitude level when you can, ideally to areas below 7,000 feet, and gradually increase altitude over time. This means you may want to wait a week or two before tackling those fourteeners! In the meantime, enjoy Red Rocks Amphitheater, the Great Sand Dunes,
or the world-famous dinosaur footprints in Colorado.
    3. Consider Potassium: When living at high altitude, remember that foods such as Colorado’s Rocky Ford cantaloupe, bananas, tomatoes, and San Luis Valley potatoes are rich in potassium, which is known to balance salt intake in the body. This salt balance is especially important as you make efforts to stay hydrated.
    4. Take It Easy: Our bodies work harder and burn more calories at high altitude, which is one of the reasons why Olympic athletes train here in Colorado. When moving to high altitude, be mindful of your physical activities and hours of rest. For example, if you typically run 3 miles a day, try running 2 at first. If you typically get 6 hours of sleep at night, increase that number to 7 and see how you feel.
    5. Create Your Own Humidifier: Believe it or not, a tried and true method to keep sinuses moist in high altitude environments is to rub the inside of your nose with olive oil before you go to sleep. The oil acts as a natural humidifier for the sinuses while you breathe deeply, and this method has been shown to reduce headaches, nose bleeds, and nausea. You may dream of Italian food, but that is just an added bonus!
